The Men's Basketball Program at Hostos Community College has always had success on the basketball court. Yet, the Basketball Program for the 2011-2012 year will also be recognized for their great success in the classroom. Overall, the Team Grade Point Average (GPA) of every student-athlete within the Men's Basketball Program was an outstanding 2.55 and an even better 2.60 for those who retained eligibility. More than half of the 17 student-athletes had GPA's better than 2.50. Freshman
Khalid Yousef led the team with a high GPA of 3.76. “I am quite proud of our academic prowess. I reiterated to the team throughout the semester that your success is our success and that we will not allow academic failure to be a staple of this program” stated first year Head Coach Jody King, Ph.D. Dr. King was hired after his program received much academic success at Maritime College during an accumulation of 3 years. Even better, the true eligible freshman in the Hostos program received a GPA of 2.73.
Furthermore, the Men's Basketball Program retained 95% of its student-athletes (16 of 17). The retention rate of 95% beats the college wide 58% retention rate as stated by numerous outlets and once again enhances the value of participation in college athletics for a student's continued success in the classroom. For example, Sophomore
Brian Morrison, who is a starter on the basketball team, is pursuing a degree in radiology. Brian was part of the short minority to pass his classes within his program and move onto the next portion toward his degree. “You cannot play without passing class, which, rung true to our great student-athletes at Hostos who believe in what and who we are as program,“ further stated Coach King.
Now the 11-4 Caimans can focus on the second half of the basketball season. They are just 2 wins away from eclipsing the total win total from last season. With remaining games in January, February, and March the race for a championship begins again!
For the first week of the New Year, the Caimans played on Tuesday night against Rockland CC on the road and were victorious 95-63. They return home on January 5
th for a 7pm tip off time against Dutchess Community College. The Caimans finish the week versus CUNY Conference Rival Bronx CC at Hostos for a 2pm tip time.
