Sunday, April 1st, marked the first of what may be many CUNY-Wide Intramurals tournaments. The new initiative is a joint effort by Hoop it Up, the CUNY Athletic Conference, and the CUNY campuses to increase athletic opportunities for all students. The CUNYAC 3v3 Hoop It Up "Intramural" Tournament began at 10:00 am in the Hostos Community College Gymnasium featuring six CUNY institutions, and an energetic atmosphere.
The 30-minute matches began with Borough of Manhattan Community College facing Brooklyn College. BMCC would take the first game and move on to the semifinal game against Baruch College where again BMCC triumphed. The victory moved them into the final.
On the other side of the bracket, Hostos Community College led off competing against Hunter College. The host would move on to face New York City College of Technology. Using the home-court to their advantage, Hostos would defeat City Tech and set up a finals matchup against BMCC.
The final was closely contested until the final buzzer, with both teams were confident that they would pullout the victory. Ultimately, the Hostos Sophomore Accounting Major and team captain, Barry Witter, would have the confidence in his team to take home the victory.
"My teammate, Troy, pulled us out in the stretch,” said Witter, “With a few seconds left, I took a time out and told our team either to score a two-point basket and play some good defense, or hit the three. Troy took option number two and hit a three from half court to win the game."
The game would end with the 3-pointer a 20-19 victory for Hostos. The three student champions included Barry Witter (Team Captain), Alhassan Bio Salifu, and Troy Honesty.
Congratulations to our champions and thank you to all of the participants and staff who made the event a success. Look out for other CUNY Intramural initiatives, including volleyball and soccer competitions as well as a 5K Health Run slated for the fall semester of 2012.
